Simms History
In 1886, Thomas Stockwell Simms commenced the Simms Company. He was an American Civil War Veteran who chose to make an investment into a Portland, Maine brush and broom organization with his soldiers’ back pay and bonus. In 1872, this start-up company relocated to Saint John, New Brunswick. This port city became widely known for its shipbuilding participation and famous all over the world.
Simms endured numerous issues but was a capable man who continued and found success. Unfortunately, he tragically lost two wives and also had an awful factory fire. He continued to strive onward despite these tragedies and forged his organization ahead.
Simms was a passionate traveller. During the 1900s, he was one of the first brush manufacturers to visit China to exclusively purchase bristles. The lay missionary movement was something he was a associated with. As a testament to his commitment and generous efforts, the Simms Memorial Baptist Church can be found in India with a robust congregation.
